Understanding GPA and CGPA

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized measure of academic achievement calculated by averaging the grade points earned across all courses, weighted by credit hours. It provides a single number that represents your overall academic performance for a specific period (usually a semester).

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) extends this to your entire academic career — it's the weighted average of GPAs across all semesters. Most universities and employers look at CGPA as the definitive measure of academic standing.

The most common GPA scale is the 4.0 scale used in the US, Canada, and many international universities. An A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Some institutions use a 5.0 scale, 10.0 scale, or percentage-based systems.

The formula is: GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours). For example, if you got an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course: GPA = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) / (3+4) = 24/7 = 3.43.

Percentage to GPA conversion varies by institution. A common mapping: 90-100% = 4.0, 80-89% = 3.0-3.9, 70-79% = 2.0-2.9, 60-69% = 1.0-1.9, below 60% = 0.0 (fail).
