45 min0.75 hrs
60 min1.00 hrs
90 min1.50 hrs
120 min2.00 hrs

Tips

  • 1.Check "crosses midnight" for overnight shifts (e.g. 10PM to 6AM).
  • 2.Decimal hours are useful for payroll (e.g. 1:30 = 1.50 hrs).
  • 3.Use Timesheet mode to sum multiple work sessions.
  • 4.Add/Subtract mode handles carrying over minutes automatically.
  • 5.Convert mode shows all units simultaneously.

Understanding Time Calculations

Time calculations are fundamental to scheduling, project management, payroll processing, and everyday planning. Unlike decimal numbers, time uses a base-60 system for minutes and seconds, making mental math error-prone.

Calculating the duration between two times requires handling cases where the end time crosses midnight, converting between 12-hour and 24-hour formats, and properly accounting for AM/PM transitions. For example, from 10:30 PM to 2:15 AM spans 3 hours and 45 minutes, crossing midnight.

Time addition and subtraction involves carrying over — 45 minutes plus 30 minutes equals 1 hour and 15 minutes, not 75 minutes. Similarly, subtracting 20 minutes from 1 hour and 10 minutes gives 50 minutes.

For project tracking and timesheets, summing multiple time entries accurately is critical for billing clients, calculating overtime, and managing resources. Many payroll systems convert time to decimal hours (e.g., 1 hour 30 minutes = 1.5 hours) for easier multiplication with hourly rates.
