In 2018, Amazon made headlines when it quietly scrapped its AI-powered hiring tool. The reason? The system consistently downgraded applications that included the word “women” (such as “women’s chess club” or “women’s coding bootcamp”). The AI had been trained on past hiring data filled with mostly male applicants. Instead of creating a fair and modern recruitment process, it mirrored historical bias.

This story highlights the challenge at the heart of artificial intelligence: AI bias. These systems don’t exist in a vacuum; they learn from us, and sometimes they inherit our flaws.
